Why I Teach Music Theory Concurrently with Students’ Piano and/or Violin Lessons

One of the advantages of taking piano and/or violin lessons at this studio is that students will be able to learn music theory on a weekly basis together with their regular piano and/or violin lessons. Students may do so individually or enroll in a separate group class. 

I have always believed that music theory is just as important as instrumental lessons, especially when students first start learning their instrument. This is because music theory not only teaches fundamental concepts, but it also allows students to have a better understanding of the music they are learning, which consequently, will impact the way they play. At a later stage, learning music theory enables students to understand about composers, the various stylistic periods and important aspects pertaining to the piece, such as structure, modulations, etc., all through analysis. 

Therefore, a student’s theory grade at this studio progresses in parallel with their instrumental grade. Oftentimes, I get transfer students who are higher than Grade 5 ABRSM in practical grade but have not learned any music theory. In this case, one of my first objectives is to ensure the student starts music theory and that it is on par with his or her practical grade. We don’t want a situation where the student is preparing for let’s say, a Grade 6 ABRSM piano exam and he or she hasn’t taken the Grade 5 ABRSM theory exam or even worse, hasn’t even started music theory at all. 

All in all, with music theory, students will be able to enjoy and appreciate the music they are learning more. Not only will they be making informative decisions about their playing, but they are also accurately communicating their music with the audience.
